The Golfodulcean poison dart frog (Phyllobates vittatus) is a strikingly beautiful amphibian native to the humid lowland forests of western Panama. Known for its vibrant yellow and black colouration, this species is part of the Phyllobates genus, which is renowned for the potent toxins found in their skin. These toxins, particularly batrachotoxin, make the frogs distasteful and dangerous to predators, though they only produce these toxins when their diet consists of specific invertebrates, such as ants and mites, which supply the necessary chemicals. The Golfodulcean poison dart frog inhabits the dense undergrowth of tropical rainforests, where it thrives in moist environments. Like other dart frogs, it exhibits interesting reproductive behaviour, with males calling to attract females and guarding the eggs until they hatch. Though its toxicity is impressive in the wild, when kept in captivity and fed a different diet, Phyllobates vittatus loses much of its toxic properties.

Adult size: ~3.5cm.

Life Span: ~10 years.
