Razor-backed musk turtles, Sternotherus carinatus, are small freshwater turtles native to the southeastern United States. Named for the distinctive sharp keel on their upper shell, they inhabit slow-moving streams, swamps, and ponds with abundant vegetation. Typically reaching 4 to 5 inches in length, these turtles possess a dark, olive to black carapace with yellowish markings. Known for their docile temperament, they primarily feed on aquatic invertebrates, small fish, and vegetation. Despite their diminutive size, they play an essential role in their ecosystem's balance. Threats include habitat loss and pollution, emphasizing the importance of conservation efforts for their survival.
