The hybrid Salvator merianae × Salvator rufescens, often referred to as a black-and-white tegu × red tegu cross, combines traits from both parent species, producing lizards with notable variation in colour, pattern, and temperament. These hybrids may show the robust build and striking black-and-white patterning of S. merianae blended with the warmer reds and oranges typical of S. rufescens. In behaviour, they are generally intelligent, active, and highly food-motivated, reflecting the notable cognitive capacity of both species. As with all tegus, these animals require spacious enclosures, high-quality diets, and careful environmental management to support their rapid growth and considerable adult size.
