The red tegu (Salvator rufescens) is a robust and strikingly coloured lizard native to western Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay. It is closely related to the Argentine black and white tegu but is distinguished by its reddish to brick-red coloration, especially prominent in adult males. Red tegus can grow up to four feet in length and are known for their muscular build and docile temperament, which makes them a popular choice among reptile keepers. Like other tegus, they are omnivorous, feeding on fruits, vegetables, insects, and small animals. They are also capable of seasonal hibernation, or brumation, in cooler climates. Despite their calm nature in captivity, red tegus require substantial space, heat, and attention to thrive.
