Green iguanas (Iguana iguana) are large, herbivorous lizards native to Central and South America, as well as parts of the Caribbean. Known for their striking green colouration—often fading to darker hues with age—and long, whip-like tails, these reptiles can grow over 6 feet in length, making them one of the largest lizards kept as pets. In the wild, they inhabit tropical rainforests and spend much of their time in trees near water sources. While green iguanas are popular in the pet trade, they require extensive care, including a large, well-ventilated enclosure with proper UVB lighting, high humidity, and a diet rich in leafy greens and vegetables. Despite their appealing appearance, they can be challenging to keep due to their size, strong claws, and sometimes aggressive behaviour, especially during breeding season. With proper handling, space, and commitment, experienced reptile keepers may find green iguanas to be intelligent and impressive companions.
