Crested anoles (Anolis cristatellus) are small, agile lizards native to Puerto Rico and introduced to parts of the south-eastern United States. They are known for the distinctive crest along the males’ necks and backs, which they use in territorial displays along with their brightly coloured dewlaps (throat fans). Typically measuring 5 to 8 inches in length, crested anoles are diurnal and arboreal, spending most of their time in trees and shrubs. They are insectivorous, feeding on a variety of small invertebrates. In captivity, they require a vertically oriented enclosure with plenty of climbing branches, moderate humidity, and UVB lighting. While not as commonly kept as some other anole species, crested anoles are fascinating pets for intermediate keepers, especially those interested in observing natural behaviours like head-bobbing, push-ups, and dewlap extension during social interactions.
