The striped brown basilisk (Basiliscus vittatus), is a striking reptile native to Central America. It is characterised by a brown or olive-brown body adorned with cream or yellowish stripes running along its sides, which help it blend into its forested surroundings. This agile lizard is semi-aquatic and highly adapted to both terrestrial and arboreal habitats, often found near rivers or streams. Males are distinguished by a prominent crest on their head and back, used for display and territorial behaviour. Thanks to its strong hind legs and specialised toe fringes, the striped brown basilisk can sprint across water surfaces for short distances to escape predators, making it one of the most fascinating species in its ecosystem.

As pets, striped brown basilisks can be intriguing but are best suited for experienced reptile keepers. These lizards require a large, vertically oriented enclosure with plenty of climbing space, hiding spots, and a warm, humid environment that mimics their natural tropical habitat. A water feature is also important, as they enjoy soaking and may even try to run across the surface if startled. While visually impressive and active, they are generally skittish and not fond of handling, often becoming stressed when interacted with too frequently. Their diet in captivity should include a variety of insects like crickets, mealworms, and occasional fruits or greens. With proper care and respect for their space, striped brown basilisks can thrive in captivity, though their high maintenance needs and nervous disposition mean they’re not ideal for beginners.
