These medium-sized snakes are known for their vibrant and striking coloration, featuring a mix of dark and light bands along their slender bodies. Typically reaching lengths of around 3 feet, Yunnan Mountain Rat Snakes are manageable in size, making them suitable for captivity. In terms of temperament, they are generally docile and can become accustomed to handling with proper care, however they generally prefer being left alone and can be skittish. Yunnan Mountain Rat Snakes primarily consume rodents, and a consistent feeding schedule is crucial for their health. Due to their stunning appearance and relatively mild disposition, Yunnan Mountain Rat Snakes are cherished by reptile enthusiasts looking for an engaging and visually appealing snake species.

Despite being known for their docile nature, hatchling and young juvenile snakes are often found to be shy and defensive, often striking at anything. This can be resolved though gentle and regular handling. It is therefore important to not be detered from handling them.
