The hourglass tree frog (Dendropsophus ebraccatus) is a small, brightly coloured amphibian named for the distinctive hourglass-shaped marking on its back. Native to Central and parts of South America, this frog is often found near ponds and slow-moving streams in tropical forests. Unlike many other tree frogs, hourglass tree frogs can lay their eggs both in water and on land, giving them a unique reproductive advantage. Their skin is usually golden or tan with dark brown markings, which help them camouflage among leaves and branches.

Keeping hourglass tree frogs as pets can be rewarding, but it requires careful attention to their specific needs. These frogs are small, delicate, and best suited for experienced amphibian keepers. They need a well-maintained terrarium that mimics their natural humid, tropical environment, including live plants, branches for climbing, and a shallow water dish. Temperature and humidity must be carefully controlled. Hourglass tree frogs are nocturnal and shy, so they should be observed rather than handled. Feeding them a diet of live insects like fruit flies or small crickets is essential. Since they can be sensitive to environmental changes and water quality, regular tank cleaning and the use of dechlorinated water are crucial.
