San Diego gopher snakes, scientifically known as Pituophis catenifer annectens, are a subspecies of gopher snakes native to the southwestern United States, particularly in the arid regions of California. These snakes are well-adapted to a variety of habitats, ranging from deserts to grasslands, and are commonly found in the vicinity of gopher tortoise burrows, hence their name. San Diego gopher snakes exhibit a distinctive appearance with a tan or yellowish background colour and dark blotches along their bodies, providing effective camouflage in their natural environment. They are non-venomous constrictors, relying on their strength and agility to subdue prey. In captivity, San Diego gopher snakes can make fascinating and relatively low-maintenance pets for reptile enthusiasts.
These snakes typically have a docile temperament but may become stressed if not given sufficient hiding spots and climbing structures.
