White-lipped pythons (Leiopython albertisii) are non-venomous snakes native to the rainforests of New Guinea and surrounding islands. Known for their striking iridescent scales that shimmer with rainbow hues in the light, these pythons are named for the distinctive white colouration on their upper lips. They can grow up to 7 feet in length and are primarily nocturnal, feeding on small mammals, birds, and reptiles.

As pets, white-lipped pythons are both admired and approached with caution. Their stunning iridescent scales and bold appearance make them highly desirable among reptile enthusiasts, particularly those with experience handling more temperamental snakes. However, they are not recommended for beginners due to their strong feeding responses and defensive behaviour—many individuals are quick to strike if they feel threatened. With regular, calm handling and proper husbandry, some white-lipped pythons can become more tolerant of interaction, though they rarely become truly docile. They require a spacious enclosure, high humidity, and a temperature gradient to mimic their natural tropical habitat. For dedicated keepers prepared to meet their needs and respect their temperament, white-lipped pythons can be a rewarding and visually striking addition to a reptile collection.
