The Timor monitor (Varanus timorensis) is a small species of monitor lizard native to the islands of Timor and nearby parts of Indonesia. Reaching an average length of around 20–24 inches, it is one of the smallest members of the monitor family, making it popular in the reptile trade. Its body is slender and agile, with a dark brown to black coloration patterned with bright yellow spots and bands, which provide camouflage in its rocky, forested habitats. Timor monitors are highly arboreal, spending much of their time climbing trees and shrubs in search of insects, small vertebrates, and eggs to eat. Despite their relatively small size, they are alert, active, and fast-moving, relying on speed and agility to escape predators. In captivity, they require spacious enclosures with ample climbing structures and a warm, humid environment to thrive. Their striking appearance and manageable size make them a fascinating example of monitor lizard diversity.
