Barking geckos, native to arid and semi-arid regions of Australia, are small to medium-sized reptiles known for their distinctive vocalisations that resemble a dog's bark. These geckos primarily use their barking sounds as a defence mechanism to deter predators and to communicate with other geckos. They are nocturnal and typically shelter under rocks or in burrows during the day to escape the intense desert heat. Barking geckos have a robust body, short limbs, and a thick tail that stores fat, which is essential for survival in harsh environments.

As pets, barking geckos are popular among reptile enthusiasts due to their manageable size, unique appearance, and quirky vocalisations. They are generally hardy and adapt well to captivity when provided with a proper habitat that mimics their natural environment—this includes a warm, dry enclosure with plenty of hiding spots and a substrate suitable for burrowing. Barking geckos are typically docile, but they can be skittish and should be handled gently and infrequently to reduce stress. Their diet consists mainly of live insects like crickets and mealworms, and they require clean water and regular enclosure maintenance. Because of their nocturnal habits, they are most active in the evening, making them intriguing pets for night owls.
